“Very recently a new cooperation was agreed between Anhalt University and the University of Liverpool, and within this cooperation students can apply to take part in an exchange with the School of Architecture at the University of Liverpool.

This exchange will be funded by the ERASMUS-Program, meaning students that are accepted to participate will receive a monthly grant of approx. 200,-€ for their time of stay and are exempt to pay the school fee of the accepting university - in case of the University of Liverpool these would usually be 4.500,-GBP per semester. That means you can study at the program in Liverpool for a semester, but will only continue paying the fees applicable for DIA Master Program.”

Students interested in taking this opportunity are asked to get in touch with Beeke Bartelt as soon as possible to have the nominations forwarded to our partner university in Liverpool quickly. It is also kindly asked of all students to check the school-email very regularly, especially towards the end of the semester.

This will be a memorable conference and a historic occasion.

On 14.04.2013 PLUM has officially announced the INTERNATIONAL FILM NIGHTS. The project, in collaboration with DIA and MAID, has an artistic touch of architects and designers. Each showcased movie along with a poster is represented by a small art installation/object and conceptual graphic work. With two movies shown already, “The Skin I live in” by Pedro Almodovar (Spain), and “Withnail and I” by Bruce Robinson (England) we would like to invite you to watch and experience “Y tu mamá también” by Alfonso Cuáron (Mexico). The event will take place on Sunday, April 28^th at 20:00 in Hardenberg. Hope to see you there and keep an eye out for future events!!!

Under its Director, Wolfgang Schirmacher, the European Graduate School [EGS] is currently inviting expressions of interest in a new ‘Digital Design’ stream within the EGS Media and Communication Division’s Postgraduate Program leading to a possible PhD.

The EGS already has a very strong reputation in the area of Critical Theory, Philosophy and Media/Film Theory, counting some of the most illustrious thinkers in the world among its faculty, including Slavoj Zizek, Alain Badiou, Giorgio Agamben, Judith Butler, Helene Cixous, Jean Luc Nancy, Manuel De Landa and Paul Virilio. It also has a strong reputation in the area of Media and Communications, with some of the leading figures in Film and Art. The EGS postgraduate program is designed for working professionals, and residential requirements are limited to attendance of a series of brief, intense workshops in the summer months at its base in Saas-Fee, Switzerland. The EGS is currently exploring the possibility of a new ‘digital design’ stream within the Media and Communication Division. If there prove to be sufficient initial expressions of interest from prospective students, the EGS will evaluate the establishment of this new program. The program will then begin in September 2013, with the first residential workshop taking place in Saas-Fee in June 2014, provided that it meets the basic minimum requirement of 20+ confirmed applicants.

The urge to establish a new Digital Design PhD stream within the Media and Communication Division at EGS stems in part from the limited number of PhD programs in this field, compared to the relative proliferation of masters programs around the world. It also stems from the growing expectation for academics to hold PhD degrees. But, above all, it stems from the demand for a relatively low cost PhD program that is flexible enough to allow those working in architectural offices or teaching in academic institutions to continue their employment while undertaking their PhD research. Current overall fees for a 4 year PhD with the EGS amount to $24, 450, making it an attractive financial option, compared to most other programs.

A number of pre-eminent figures from the field of Digital Design have already offered to teach on the new program:

John Frazer is regarded by many as the godfather of architectural computation, and acknowledged as a leader in the field of evolutionary digital design, and originator of the Evolutionary Digital Design Process. His seminal book, An Evolutionary Architecture, is regarded as a classic within the field.

Mark Burry is Professor of Innovation at RMIT, and Director of the Spatial Information Architecture Laboratory and founding Director of the Design Research Institute at RMIT. He is also executive architect and researcher for the Sagrada Familia Church in Barcelona, Spain.

Neil Leach is a designer and architectural theorist, who has published 23 books on architectural theory and digital design. He has taught at several leading schools of architecture, including SCI-Arc, Columbia GSAP, AA, DIA, IaaC and USC, and is a NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts Fellow developing robotic fabrication technologies for printing structures on the Moon and Mars.

In the first year instructors will each offer 3 days of intensive lectures over the residential summer workshop in Saas-Fee, Switzerland. These lectures are designed to fulfill the requirements of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) regarding contact hours and student workload.

During their second year students get the chance to study under the other illustrious EGS professors. Aside from Slavoj Zizek, and the other figures mentioned above, these also include others working in architecture and digital theory, such as Geert Lovink, Lev Manovich, Mitchell Joachim and Hendrik Speck. As they enter their third year, upon completion of all course work and examinations, students will be invited to establish supervisory arrangements with the individual professors. Research is expected to be self-directed according to the European model.

When the party reaches its quintessential peak, get ready to play the Dirty Santa Game! To play the game, we request you each to bring a little gift of not more than 2 euro or a gift from your own country. Our hosts Ira Efremova and Adel Sattaripour will lead you through the exciting journey and leave you with a joyous memorable evening.

Since we are going to have a Christmas Tree for our party, we ask you all to bring your country flag printed on both sides of an A6 paper, with a tiny hole on the top-corner tied to a loop of thread, so that it can be hung on the X-mas tree!

Lars Lerup, designer and writer, is a Professor of Architecture at RSA and a guest professor at Dessau Institute of Architecture, HS Anhalt. He was Dean at Rice School of Architecture and William Ward Watkin Professor from 1993 to 2009. Previously, he taught for many years at the University of California at Berkeley. His work focuses on the intersection of nature and culture in the contemporary American metropolis, and on Houston in particular. Lerup was named the Swedish-American Citizen of the Year in 2004 for his lifelong contributions to architectural education and practice.

Congratulations to Tudor Cosmatu, Irina Bogdan & Andrei Raducan!!!

All of them graduates of “Ion Mincu University” and of the Dessau Institute of Arhitecture, they founded the T_A_I group (Technology_Architecture_Innovation), connected by their common interest in digital design and in sharing different sofware and programming knowledge. They now aim at sharing their digital tools and knowledge to the world through national and international trainings and
workshops on parametric design and generative architecture.

Parametric design represents a huge leap in the quality of architecture since it is not bound by tools anymore, it designs and creates its’ own tools. And it’s basically about planning and implementing change in the world around. And, to the human enterprise of design, parametric systems bring fresh and needed new capabilities to explore the possibilities inherent in a design idea.

HP Designjet along with SPAN Architecture and students from the Dessau Institute of Architecture (DIA) to design cities of the future. DIA presented their future cities project at this year’s Venice Biennale where they exhibited their concept among the world´s best and brightest young architects. In this video, the students and their professors share their ideas about the future of architecture and technology.

“Research by Design” - Products and processes of space in transformation

Workshop: 8.11.12 – 11.11.12

1. Background

The initiative for this workshop comes from the experience of 12 years studio- and courses-teaching at DIA and at the Department of Architecture, Geo-Information and Facility Management. Built space will be approached to from two sides which represent the specific profile of DIA: the side of architecture and engineering and the side of landscape urbanism. Both sides will be addressed as an urban and architectural competition aiming to bring them together by multi-media approaches, computational techniques, as well as sketching and modelling.

2. Site

The selected site is the former castle-garden in front of the relics of a Renaissance castle near the river Mulde, which have already been considered locally for establishing a meeting point for cultural activities. This perspective leaves open whether and how to build appropriate structures for different groups of users relative to an urban landscape to be re-defined.

3. Brief

The workshop aims to mediate research by design as a field of work where different levels of knowledge and skills are to be brought together and applied on a number of stages of design, developing the appropriate tools for manipulating and analyzing architecture and landscape urbanism simultaneously on the following levels: elements as basic components, structures and structural systems, environmental conditions and landscape formations, geographic and socio-economic situation. The workshop will promote multidisciplinary approach to design, bringing together academics from DIA, Hochschule Anhalt, from Beuth-Hochschule Berlin, from the Institute for Computational Design in the Stuttgart University and from the international engineering consultancy of Buro Happold.

The students are asked to finish the workshop with a three-dimensional product of simulating space which shows the stages of transformation from the basic concept (A) to the working model (B) and explore a range of transformations of this model (B1, 2, 3 etc.) as a start into further elaborations throughout the semester. Buro Happold will help to evaluate the presented projects of architecture and landscape design from point of view of the industry, providing suggestions how to develop it further. Until the end of the semester, students can produce a „mock-up“ (a prototype from cheap materials, wood, plywood, MDF or carton), to be presented to industries which might be willing to donate materials and labor for erecting a real structure at a later point of time (A to B to… Z).

4. Workshop

The two sides are represented by Krassimir Krastev (architecture/ construction) and Prof. Dr. Andrea Haase andf Prof. Rainer Schmidt (landscape/ urbanism). Alex Kalachev (DIA) and Tobias Schwinn (Institute for Computational Design – Stuttgart) will support on both sides with form-finding and fabrication techniques by analogue as well as computational (Grasshopper) methods. Buro Happold, Berlin will be involved as a consultant from the construction industry. Multi-media testing will be the issue for a committed start into wider and deeper processes of evaluation, conceptualization and method-elaboration through working in the studios (Krastev, Haase) and in the related compulsory courses of Research Methods (Haase) and of Computer Aided Design (Kalachev) as well as in a specific course at Beuth-Hochschule Berlin about “Specific items of Landscape design” (Schmidt/ Forner). The results will then be brought together at the end of the semester in a digital presentation/ brochure.

The workshop is focused primarily on generating ideas for one or a few winning strategies to respond to the site and the brief in order to open up methodical access to “innovative creativity”. The form-finding, fabrication and analysis tools to be studied will be only an introduction of a rich palette of research and design methods to be developed further during the semester. The knowledge generated during the workshop will be the base to build upon in the further development of the winning projects. However, it will already demonstrate thorough understanding of both architecture and landscape urbanism.

2 November, Friday:

- Students submit workshop proposals: 300 words + 1 image or diagram on 1 A4 page.

Students should explain and illustrate very briefly what is the intention for joining this workshop. The proposal should clearly answer two questions: What is the topic of research that will be explored during the workshop? What is the object(s) of design that will be developed during the workshop? Students may submit their proposals individually or as a group.

- The tutors select the projects that will take part in the workshop. Students may be assigned to groups based on relevance of the proposed projects.

8 November, Thursday afternoon:

Space (Haase) – Lectures: Mode2 of knowledge/ Creating concepts for new spatial/ environmental qualities, enriching nature by culture/ Location and context/ Testing holistically in general (theories of innovation, system thinking, modernization) and relative to locally specific aspects for distinctive values in place and time (legibility, robustness, variety, permeability)

Landscape/ urban design (Schmidt) – Lectures: Methods/ techniques to find a concept for designing a place in between the river valley and the core of the town; modeling, testing: Structure, texture, materiality, light for any kind of built form, providing for shelter and exhibition/ meeting space with spatial relationship to the riverside, crossing the bridge

Architecture/ engineering (Krastev)- Lectures: Materials, Structures and the Industry. The capacity of materials to generate structures in nature and in the industry. The role of environmental and structural simulations in determining the volume, geometry and skin of built structures.

Computer-Aided Design (Kalachev)- Lectures: The role of simulation and modelling of geometry and processes in Architecture.

Digital Fabrication (Schwinn)- Lectures: Machine and robotic manufacturing techniques and processes, understanding the capabilities of contemporary industry to manipulate materials and assemble structures.

Group work: Applying and developing the combined knowledge individually and intuitively using a variety of tools

10 November, Saturday:

The developed models test and simulate the hypotheses set forth by the projects accepted to the workshop

11 November, Sunday:

Presenting and evaluating the preliminary results and outlining further steps of work

In order to illustrate the task, a few questions with relevance to various topics are raised:

Conditions of creating, transforming and occupying spaces

Which elements and concepts of form and topography can we mediate as parts of the environment digitally and physically (use, image, concept of space)? Which patterns are appropriate where for transformation relative to needs for enhancing the synergy between landscape and built form?

Simulation – design

Which kind of reflection and change of patterns is provided by the medium of digital technologies for simulation?

- behavioral simulation, such as movement or group interactions in multi-agent systems

- simulation of the environment, such as light, heat, wind

Architecture/ engineering

How do the proposed research topic and object of design illustrate Architecture as an art of Engineering and vice-versa?

Architectural performance

How do the investigated space and structure perform for the way they are used and occupied, and how do they respond to the environment around them? How will they adapt to possible changes of the way they are used and occupied?

Structure and material

What are the geometries and structures that are “embedded” into the materials that are being researched? What are the basic components of the investigated structures and how are they assembled into a generic structural system? What are the hierarchical relationships between the separate structural geometries and assemblies? What can we learn from the behavior of the structural system and use this knowledge to generate new basic components? How to make the smallest basic components of a structure, or how to re-invent the brick?

Geometry and Form

How does the process of manufacturing a structure inform its geometry? How does the use the space within a structure determine its form? How do the weather and the environment inform the structure and its skin as an interface between the space within the structure and the rest of the world?

Philosophy – ethics – design theory

What is the ethical and socially-relevant thesis investigated with the proposed research topic and object of design within the framework of contemporary arts, architecture and urbanism? Which stage of knowledge have we reached? Which are the determinants, which the variables? Which parameters are opposite which values? How is the relationship of the disciplines among each other in consequence of the reflections? What does this mean for a development of the making professions as knowledge base? How do human, nature and engineering sciences and the making professions meet? What is the understanding of “efficiency” of the making professions? What is still open for needed changes? Which gain of knowledge do we have for an innovative understanding of transformation?
